Thank you to Mr Talbot who kicked off the first session of our Learning and Teaching Club. Mr Talbot presented on the Concept Attainment Strategy which engages students in forming their own definition of a concept by examining the attributes of several examples and non-examples of the word, concept, or topic. With the Concept Attainment strategy, students use cognitive strategies and higher order thinking skills, such as classifying, identifying characteristics and relationships, testing hypotheses, and applying new ideas while using the target vocabulary and concept. They must discriminate between what is and what is not an example of the target concept. Concept Attainment can be used at any level, and is a good differentiating technique, since students’ guesses are so varied. With this strategy, the target concept or idea is not communicated to the students. The teacher presents examples (verbal or pictures), and the students guess the concept by figuring out the common attributes. Thanks again to Mr Talbot, and to all teachers who attended.
Congratulations to our U19 Basketball team today on a hard fought win over Ard Scoil na Tríonóide 🏀.

With the greatest of sadness the principal, staff and Board of Management of Athy College convey their sympathies to the families, friends, and schools of the young students in Clonmel who tragically lost their lives in a car accident last night.
At a time when students throughout the country are celebrating their results and planning on the next chapter of their lives with excitement, an accident like this send a sharp reminder of the fragility of life. We cannot begin to feel the loss experienced by their families but we hold them all in our thoughts and prayers. Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the students who were tragically killed and injured in the car accident in Monaghan this week. As our students prepare for their Debs later this week we are shocked at how such an event can turn to tragedy in a matter of minutes and how fragile life can be. Our sympathy with the management of Largy College which is part of Cavan Monaghan ETB
