Athy College Commemorates First Dail

19/1/2019

Picture
On 21st January 1919 many Irish elected representatives who had been elected to the House of Commons decided instead to establish our own government - the government which we still have today - Dáil Eireann.

Athy College will be re-enacting the first Dáil's roll call, the reading of the Declaration of Independence, the raising of the tricolour and the singing of our national anthem on Monday.  On 21st Jan 1919 the War of Independence began which ended in 1922 with the establishment of the 26 county Irish Free state.

21st January is one of the most important dates in the Irish calendar and Athy College staff and students are proud to hold this commemoration
