Athy College's Link with RACE Academy.
Former Athy College student Robbie Smithers continues to make steady progress in the tough World of horse racing and has been getting the occasional race on the all weather track in Dundalk. Robbie, who graduated from RACE Academy (The Jockey Apprentice school) in June 2014 is now based as an apprentice jockey in Michael Halfords's yard. On
Sunday 24th April Robbie got his first race on grass when he rode a horse called 'Bert Leaf' for trainer Seamus Fahey and owner PJ Davis (Robbie's Grandfather) in Gowran Park in the 4:40 race. This was quickly followed by his second race on Monday evening in Naas when he rode a horse called "Lady Ranger' for trainer Peter McCreery.
Also, Conor Casey who is, at present, a student in Race Academy is now only a few weeks away from graduating in June 2016. Conor is currently based in Dermot Weld's yard.
