Athy College

Home School Community Liason

Where do our students spend most of their waking hours?

A child under 16 years old spends 85% of this time either in the home or in the community. Parents/ Guardians know their own children so well, and can help us, as teachers, do a better job here in school for the other 15% of those waking hours.

Part of my job, as Home School Community Liaison  Coordinator  (HSCL) is to visit homes and community agencies. The aim of H.S.C.L. is to foster sharing and active cooperation between parents, teachers and relevant community workers. We promote the lifeskills and educational interests of our students.

The encouragement and support a student gets at home from parents/guardians is as important for educational success as are all the school classes attended by students. Part of my job is to support parents/guardians as they do their job and to help them to value themselves.

Athy Community is entering exciting times. Some parents/guardians may like to get more involved in school life by joining one of the parents’ groups or by attending short courses---how about Christmas cookery , Know your teenager, or Computer beginnings?---Let us know what interests you.

I have always enjoyed the chance to get to know Parents/Guardians better at school visits and at parent /teacher meetings in St. Brigid’s during my years as a teacher I know the dedication of the staff here in encouraging each student to reach his /her potential. I welcome this new opportunity to coordinate the link, to liaise, between  Home and School in the new Community College.
